As defined by the SCDF, fire safety works are works that ‘include changes in design and layout of spaces that affects the means of escape, relocation of fire safety products, etc.’

Some of the common fire safety works are:
– New partition walls that affect the travelling distances to the emergency exits.
– Change of use that requires additional fire safety protection and affects the number of occupants.

Mechanical ventilation, abbreviated as M/V on drawings, is the intentional movement of air by means of mechanical system, such as supply fans and exhaust fans. Air-conditioning units, that do not have fresh air intake functions, are not considered mechanical ventilation devices.

A space within the building is usually mechanical ventilated when it cannot be ventilated naturally

Natural Ventilation

Natural ventilation, abbreviated as N/V on drawings, is fulfilled when a space has ventilation openings or windows that lead to an open space for fresh air. The BCA requires openings with an aggregate area of at least 5% of its floor area. Most residential spaces must be ventilated naturally.
