Renamed to Fire Safety Department (FSD) in 2020, the FSD of the SCDF administers the Fire Safety Act in Singapore. The FSD oversees the fire safety plan approvals and issuance of the Fire Safety Certificates. The SCDF Fire Code is the primary code for designing fire safety provisions in buildings.
The shelter branch of the former FSSD is now under the purview of the Volunteer & Community Partnership Department of the SCDF. While the Shelter Act and the technical requirements of the household shelter and storey shelter are administered by the SCDF, the Civil Defence Shelter Engineering Department of the BCA approves the shelter plans and conducts inspection on the shelters.
